Getting Started

Last spring, I decided to run a half-marathon to raise money for the congregation of which I am the pastor. I had always wanted to be a runner but was never good at it as a kid and never kept at it long enough to really feel like I could consider myself one. Then I started reading about other people who were runners who also walked a bit while they ran. I realized that I could be a runner even if I wasn't fast, even if I walked part of the time. So I started walking and running, then trunning and walking. I entereed a few 5K races and had fun and kept at it.

West Ave Church is located in a faitrly low-income neighborhood of Buffalo, NY. Most of the members live in the neighborhood and work hard to a good friend in the community. We have a weekly group for seniors to come for socializing and lunch. We have a craft group, we serve community dinners once each month, we are home to a food pantry and a Hispanic congregation. The challenge is we don't have much money to keep up the building and pay for utilities. So I decided to run as a fund-raising event. The first time was the Nissan Buffalo Half Marathon. This year it will be the Fallsview Casino International Marathon ( I will do 1/2). Again this will be to raise money for the congregation and to help myself get into better shape. This year I will walk far more than I run becasue I have fallen off the working-out wagon for several months. Watch this space for training information. The race is 12 weeks away. The training calendar starts today.
